ABOUT OUR NEW ISSUES 202

Our July magazine (issue 202) features the iconic songstress Ruth Brown as we continue to chronicle her career, this time following her activities during the first seven months of 1953.  By now Ruth was established as one of the top female artists in the rhythm and blues field and continued to go from strength to strength. Indeed, her popularity was exemplified when in early spring her latest platter, the punchy ‘(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean’ topped the Billboard R & B chart whilst also being her first record to cross over to the popular charts, peaking at No. 23. Her follow-up release on Atlantic ‘Wild Wild Young Men’ written by label supremo Ahmet Ertegun didn’t enjoy quite the same success but still reached a very respectable No. 7 on the same R & B chart in the summer, pulling in good sales with the record buying public and in the Juke Box market.

Throughout the period Ruth kept to a demanding touring schedule with one-nighters and longer engagements. Perhaps the highlight was a six-week nationwide tour which started in late February; the package was sometimes billed as the ‘Three B’s’ with Ruth featuring alongside Count Basie and Billy Eckstine. Touring wasn’t without its risks though, in June came a frightening incident when Ruth was caught up in a riot at a Town Hall dance in Philadelphia where bullets were flying, Ruth being rescued from the venue by Arthur Prysock. Phew! July ended on a high though, Ruth making the front cover of ‘The Cash Box’ magazine on July 25th’whilst earlier in the month she returned to Harlem’s Apollo Theater for a one-week engagement.

Presented in our much-appreciated day-by-day format, the front cover of this 72 page magazine carries another stunning Kriegsmann publicity shot of Ruth and, as always, the feature is loaded with lots of rare photos, ads, some superb newspaper clippings (including ‘The Cash Box’ cover), and colour label scans of her contemporary Atlantic releases. The final pages comprise a short review section and advertisements which conclude a lovely issue.

ABOUT THE MAGAZINE

American Music Magazine is published by the Swedish Rock 'n' Roll Club. We are a non profit organisation devoted to the 1950s rock 'n' roll music and our intention is to document, as far as possible, the early years of rock-a-billy, rock 'n' roll and its related artforms. The text of the magazine is in Swedish and English. Each issue is full of original photographs and discographies.

AM works in co-operation with the "Tales From The Woods" Roots Music Social Networking Group in the U.K. The aim is to collaborate to keep rock ‘n' roll, its history, and its many talented artists and musicians alive for posterity and future generations – this through sharing articles that have appeared in our magazines over the years, helping each other with publicity and generally spreading the word not just to the converted, but also to those yet to share our enthusiasm.

American Music Magazine drivs helt ideelt utan ekonomisk vinning.
